Reroutes: In Search of The Qhapaq Ñan
Translated from Quechua, the ‘Royal Road’ once united all Andean communities from Colombia to Chile in an intricate road system of more than 30,000 km that in 2014 became an UNESCO World Heritage site.
Constructed by the Incas over several centuries and partly based on pre-Inca infrastructure, this extraordinary network through one of the world’s most extreme geographical terrains linked the snow-capped peaks of the Andes - at an altitude of more than 6,000 m - to the coast, running through hot rainforests, fertile valleys and absolute deserts. It reached its maximum expansion in the 15th century, when it spread across the length and breadth of the Andes.

Iam late to the party, but this jacket is the BEST in the category, its has everything ! - Best syntethic technology, check. - Best fabric materials, check. - Light for what it is, check. - Big zipper, check. - Dual zipper, check. - Belay button on the bottom of the jacket, check. - Cinch cords everywhere, check. - Hood move with your head, check. - High pockets, check. - Internal Drop pockets, check. Good job guys, already have one on my collection.

Please always fit two way pit zips, I like to open a little in the middle. Not really achievable with the one zip.

Hey! How come the waterproofness/breathability is 20k/20k on this but 10k/35k on the Kinetic 2.0?
It comes down to the fact that it's a Woven face fabric on the Firewall light vs a Knitted Face fabric on the Kinetic 2.0. This has a significant effect on how they both perform hence the differences. They're both great jackets, but if you want something that will move with you whilst offering protection I'd take the kinetic as it has more of a softshell feel but is a hard shell. The Firewall light however has the more traditional hard shell feel to it and will keep you dryer for longer when out on the trail.

I think this, or the Mythic Alpine could become my new "go to" jacket.
The crappy background music and effects destroys the spirit of the video. it totally demeans the life threatening efforts of the climbers by drowning their haunting voices in their stupid effects.
In my experience the pads (from other manufacturers) with that kind of dimples and a 20D fabric tend to get micro leaks at the welds. Those dimples are very comfortable but seem to add a lot of stress on the fabric compared to horizontal of vertical baffles. I like the design to reduce convection heat loss (which makes pads colder than what their R-value suggests). I'd love to tryout the Rab Ultrasphere for my upcoming Alps traverse !

recycled poly always. i challenge anyone to look up "plucking down feather production process" on youtube and still argue for down. once you see and hear a plucked and bleeding duck you'll know what i mean.
Hi Dawn, Thank you for your comment. We use recycled down in many of our products where this is possible. When we have to use virgin down for the performance properties, we only use down sourced from Europe, and accredited by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which does not permit live plucking. @@RabEquipmentThe RSPCA assure animal flesh filled sandwiches in the supermarkets meet standards that improve the lives of farm animals, for example. The irony is not lost on people that choose to not support such practices. Biproducts from industries that suggest these animal parts are free from cruelty is often a hard thing to determine. We need to get wiser about our use of plastic, this I think is much easier than having to choose to cause unnecessary harm to living beings, particularly in the case of what is technically a (performance) fashion item. Just a thought

I love Rab gear - love to buy British and really wanted to like this but.. no way I’m trusting anything to those flappy loose side pockets and I’m not tying anything to the front, side or bottom of my pack with what looks like string. Also the lack of hip belt pockets is disappointing, I like to keep my phone there for navigating and taking pictures.
